Land for the stateless is a collection of Short Stories for youth about Californians who fought for Education Equality
The book highlights people of color who became educators and were instrumental in developing the Sacramento Region - California's capital.
Our book was inspired by an article our CEO came across during her research: ‘Education is the land I give them’ – mothers’ investments in children’s future livelihoods amid growing land competition in rural Uganda. Like in Uganda, economics is what spurred exclusion and prejudice in California for over a century. Land ownership, financial well being, gender roles, and upward mobility were limited based on perceived race, creating a feeling and reality of many U.S.citizens being "Stateless" in all ways but the title.
This book is written for youth ages 8-13, but can be consumed by all. Our hope is that people come to realize that our revered cultural icons, never knew their fate. They simply chose to maintain their integrity despite their oppressive circumstances, and continued to take the next best step for them, and their culture.
The book was funded through the Civil Liberties grant of the California State Library.
